Valor Mortis: first-person combat, a big Twitch debut

Meet Valor Mortis: first-person Soulslike combat, launch Game Pass tiers and why its 113K Twitch audience peak is a different measure from Steam players.

Commit to attacks, break enemy posture and explore a plague-torn world. Launch access includes Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass; viewer peaks measure attention, not purchases.

Valor Mortis launched on October 13, 2026, bringing a first-person action game set in a plague-torn alternative Napoleonic Europe to players on PC and consoles. One More Level, the studio associated with Ghostrunner, developed it; Steam lists Lyrical Games and One More Level as publishers. The early attention story is unusual: tracker SteamDB reported a 4,647-player Steam concurrency peak dated October 13, while its Twitch figures peaked at 113,612 viewers. Independent service Streams Charts recorded a similar 113,246-viewer Twitch peak for October 2026 so far. These are differently defined platform peaks, not a direct viewer-to-buyer conversion rate.

For readers deciding what to watch or play, the more important story is what the game actually does: deliberate swordplay, limited firearms, an interconnected world and a style of defense that can restore health.

What kind of game is it? Not Ghostrunner 3

One More Level's name may be familiar to players of Ghostrunner, but Valor Mortis is a different game with a different combat rhythm. You play William, a soldier who fought for Napoleon and returns from death into an infected, nightmarish Europe. The fictional Crimson Plague shapes the setting, enemies and supernatural abilities. It's a first-person perspective, but the official combat explanation focuses on parries, posture breaks, dodges, scarce ammunition and planned attacks alongside mobile first-person movement. It combines committed attacks with agility; it is not simply Ghostrunner at a slower speed.

The level design also rewards revisiting earlier areas. The publisher describes ability-gated routes, shortcuts, optional mini-bosses and story fragments off the direct path. That is why the game is framed as both Soulslike and exploratory; it would be misleading to describe it as a straight-line historical shooter.

The main combat idea in plain English

The October 13 developer-publisher guide published on Xbox Wire explains how different combat tools feed into one another. Here are the mechanics that matter if a gameplay trailer leaves you wondering what you're watching.

Situation Publisher-documented system Practical takeaway
An enemy is defending itself Hits and successful parries damage its posture; breaking posture permits a powerful follow-up Time your attacks rather than endlessly trading damage
You are swinging a weapon You cannot cancel that attack animation into a parry Make a deliberate commitment; don't assume instant defense is available
A hit has just been blocked A timely counter can restore health lost during the block Defense and recovery are linked, rather than wholly separate actions
Ammunition is running low Shooting glowing weak points helps replenish nephtoglobin; enemies may drop ammo Look for weak spots, not only raw bullet damage
A path looks inaccessible Some glowing environmental nodes can be shot; later abilities can reopen routes Exploration may require returning after gaining new powers

These are documented mechanics, not results from HotRank's own playthrough. They are useful as a quick orientation, but the detailed balancing and the consistency of each technique across every enemy remain untested here.

What are Ambers, and how can builds change?

The publisher calls Ambers equipment-like modifiers slotted at lanterns. Some boost statistics; others alter the risk of a build. Its official examples are more informative than a generic “customizable skills” claim:

  • Marksman's Bane is described as enabling bullet parries and supplying a pistol round after a successful bullet parry.
  • Volatile End causes a weak-point shot to trigger additional explosive damage.
  • Butcher's Carnage makes melee attacks restore health, at the cost of preventing healing with Ferrofluid Flasks.

A player who likes safe defense should notice the trade-off in the third example before copying the build. These are illustrative, publisher-described modifiers, not a tested tier list or a recommendation to follow a specific upgrade route.

Why did Twitch interest stand out at launch?

Two different public tracking services show comparable high viewership around launch. SteamDB's Valor Mortis page showed a historical 113,612 Twitch viewers and a 4,647 Steam concurrent-player peak; Streams Charts' Twitch statistics page showed 113,246 peak viewers during October 2026 so far. The similarity is a useful cross-check that the broad scale was not unique to one source, but it does not mean both services sampled the same data. The exact reason for their 366-viewer difference is not disclosed, so it should not be attributed to a particular sampling window without evidence.

A viewer is not a Steam player. One person can watch a streamer without owning a game; some owners watch rather than play, and console/Game Pass players are absent from Steam counts. Twitch peak viewers and Steam peak players are also each maxima over their observation windows, not necessarily simultaneous. Dividing one peak by the other would create an attractive but meaningless “conversion” number.

Our editorial interpretation is narrower: Valor Mortis drew unusually visible streaming attention relative to the first Steam concurrency picture. Whether this attention translates into sustained players, word of mouth or sales is unknown. To explain why the peak occurred would require specific creator/VOD evidence and comparable before-and-after audience data, which this story does not have.

Where can you play, and is it on Game Pass?

The publisher's Xbox Wire launch post explicitly says the game is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere. Its October 7 Game Pass announcement specifically lists a day-one October 13 release for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, covering Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, handheld and PC. That is the announced launch offering, not a promise for every subscription tier or region. Steam has its own official PC product page, listing Simplified Chinese interface and subtitles, but no full Chinese audio, and there is a PlayStation product listing for the PS5. The exact availability of a Game Pass tier or a specific store in a particular country should be verified at the user's point of access rather than assumed globally.

This report does not claim that cross-platform multiplayer exists: the game is described as single-player, and Xbox Play Anywhere refers to supported purchases/entitlements within the Xbox ecosystem, not a blanket cross-platform co-op guarantee. A launch promotion, price or tier restriction can change without changing the fact that the game released.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

If you enjoy first-person games and deliberate dodge/parry combat, the combat mechanics and eerie alternate-history setting offer a clear reason to investigate. If you like Ghostrunner, check whether the added defensive timing, enemy positioning and repeat encounters suit you; a familiar developer does not make this a direct sequel. If you dislike demanding timing and repeat encounters, watch the PlayStation gameplay trailer before deciding. For someone primarily interested in the streaming phenomenon, the official game reveal and the two linked statistics sources provide a better starting point than a speculative revenue prediction.

What HotRank has not verified

We have not performed a full playthrough, tested performance on different hardware, verified a definitive difficulty ranking, independently reproduced every Amber interaction, proven the cause of the Twitch audience peak, or measured real paid sales or retention. A daily online peak can change, so the numbers above are explicitly dated October 14, 2026 research snapshots, not “live now” counters. Further articles should be driven by a meaningful official patch, attributable streaming event or independently supported change—not by mechanically changing the date.
